The gallery is delighted to present NICE WORK, a group exhibition of paintings and works on paper.

The show surveys a selective output from artist’s studios over the last twenty months of relative isolation. It is not a story of the pandemic. Instead, NICE WORK demonstrates what hungry eyes are craving now. There is no fear of the apocalypse, rather an acceptance of its dawn. Unconcerned with appearance or opinion, caution is thrown to the wind, and in choosing humor and color as their last words, the artists play with absurdity. — SULK CHICAGO

“The impetus for curating this show was a mostly selfish one. When presented with the opportunity to curate a group show, many more questions followed. Will there be a gimmick? How many people? What does Chicago–or the world for that matter–need to see right now? The truth is, finding the answers to these questions seemed pretty boring to me. I knew I didn’t want it to be a gag show of clever, tongue-in-cheek semantics, and I don’t think anyone really needs to see anything. If I were to bundle up and get on the train willingly and give a night of my life to indulge the pleasure of art viewing on a cold December night, what would I want to see to have that desire fulfilled all at once? I’d want to see nice things, things I recognize, things that excite me and incite me to make work. Nice work. If I wanted greatness, I’d go to the museum to look at objects that’ve had their greatness tirelessly debated for centuries. Most of us haven’t the time nor energy to make such weighty decisions on a Friday night.

Surely, it can’t be right to curate a whole group show around a concept as arbitrary as “niceness”, can it? I’m not qualified to say, but I think that’s the point.”
